THE UNTAMED/CQL FANFICTION

SERIES

  • Heavenly Questions
    • as the stars in their constellations
    • "Please tell me if I have understood correctly." An inclination of his head invites her to continue. "My sons, who currently visit me only once a month, will now be allowed to see me only once every other month. And then, after a cycle of this, it will be only once per season. And then after that, I presume, I will see them only once a year." Or not at all. That is no doubt the ultimate aim. Not at all.

Madam Lan lives long enough to take back some agency--and her sons.

    • what virtue moonlight

Everyone has heard the story of the lost Lan heirs, stolen from their rightful home by their wicked mother. Robbed of their position and inheritance, lost to the cultivation world forever.

Wei Wuxian always thought there were a few holes in that story.

  • what you love will not be spared
    • the dark, the light, the flame

Wen Chao had not kept Wei Ying as a hostage in the traditional sense. He had kept him as a prize of war, a statement to his own troops, not to his enemies. Look at this defanged, declawed thing. This once-untamed creature made pathetic, all his light doused by the Wen’s black sun. Every time he hauled Wei Ying out in chains, used him as a piece of furniture, Wen Chao had been flaunting his power.

Wen Chao doesn't throw Wei Wuxian into the Burial Mounds. Lan Wangji finds him anyway. And then they both have to deal with the aftermath.

STAND-ALONES

  • blood in the water, smoke in the sky

“Surely my little cousin hasn’t turned up here to defend Jiang dogs?” Wen Chao demands, and she is standing on the edge of a precipice. If she does not play this right, she will have destroyed everything she has labored her whole life to build. She will forfeit her life, and worse, the lives of those she loves.

But she has worked since she was a child to maintain her equanimity, both as a doctor and as a vulnerable pawn in the hands of powerful men. Her composure is waiting for her, and she pulls it on, feeling the cool strength of it settle around her shoulders as she lifts her chin.

    “I want this one.”

    Wen Chao blinks. “What?”

    “I want Jiang Wanyin.”

Wen Qing goes with her brother to Lotus Pier after its fall, only to find Jiang Cheng in the hands of her cousin.

“I want you to marry Jie.”

He’s watching out of the corner of his eye so he sees the surprise flash across Wei Wuxian’s face before it shifts into understanding. “So she can stay here,” Wei Wuxian says. So we can all be together, he doesn’t say.

“I already wrote to the Jin.”

Wei Wuxian is silent for a moment, then says, “We could use the support of other sects.”

Jiang Cheng only says it out loud because he’s so fucking tired. (He doesn’t sleep much anymore.) “I don’t care.”

Wei Wuxian smiles, a tight, mirthless smile Jiang Cheng has never seen before. “Me neither.”

  • use the wood brought in by the tide

Lan Wangji looks from face to face to face. All three of them are red-eyed and weary-looking. There is no feeling of resistance in the room. Everyone in this room knows how unjust Yu-furen’s reaction was. And yet not even Wei Ying, so quick to speak, to act when anyone else is the subject of unfairness, seems…resigned. Yes. That is the word. They are all resigned.

It curdles in Lan Wangji’s stomach, the knowledge that this must be a common occurrence. He had known that things were not right in the Jiang family, but he had not known that they were like this.

Months into his arranged marriage to the head disciple of the Jiang sect, Lan Wangji confronts family dynamics unlike any he has encountered before.

(The fact that he's desperately in love with his husband only complicates things.)

  • the heart's reasons seen clearly

For all she has always thought of herself primarily as a healer, lately Wen Qing feels like she never actually heals anyone. Everything is palliative care. Everything is triage.

Jiang Yanli goes with her brothers to Nightless City. Wen Qing finds herself making choices she never thought she’d make.

“Something’s wrong,” he finds himself insisting. “I don’t know what but--something’s wrong with Lan Zhan.”

“Dr. Wen will take care of it, Wei-xiong, you know how good she is.”

“No, you don’t understand! Something is wrong.”

Not for one second does Wei Ying consider that it might be pon farr.

  • with intent

Under other circumstances, it would make no sense for a healthy young cultivator’s golden core to be overwhelmed by mere cold, much less for qi infusions to be fruitless. But these caves and the tunnels that connect them are no ordinary place. This attack on Wei Ying--because that’s what it has to be--is intentional: this place, suffused with the presence of Lan Wangji’s ancestors, is attacking the presence of a stranger as automatically as a guard attacks a thief in the night.

    The forehead ribbon isn’t enough.
